Iga Swiatek reclaimed World No. 1 with a sterling performance to beat Jessica Pegula 6-1 6-0 to win the WTA Finals.

Swiatek, who had beaten Aryna Sabalenka in the semi- finals to overturn Belarusian ouster of her in the US Open, was brilliant on Monday, showing a dominance class to win in two straight sets. Although the match had started with the 22 year- old showing some spark of intent to repeat her feat in win against Coco Gauff in the semi- final, it didn’t last long.

Swiatek, realising her quest to reclaim World No. 1 spot, rattled the World No.5 to take the first set 6-1. At the start of the second set she broke with an early dominance to go 3-0, thanks to not difficult surface on Saturday when the rain disrupted the semi-final match which was later replayed Sunday against Sabalenka.

She was absolutely phenomenal finishing the match in 59 minutes bagelling her rival to complete an early finish as against some pundits assumption the match might go longer. She won the second set 6-0. She now returns to the No.1 spot and maintains an 11 match winning streak.

‘’Thank you for all these Polish Flags and all these Polish people coming to every tournament, but also from many countries.

‘Every year I feel I have more and more support and it really keeps me pushing for more, so thank you guys.’’ Swiatek said after the match, appreciating the crowd.

Meanwhile, Pegula felt Swiatek has always been a fantastic opponent, ‘’I want to say congrats to IIga and your team and family on an amazing year. Ending the year No. 1 and winning this tournament. You continue to push me to be a better player every year. It makes me a much better player. I really appreciate that.’’

The season End tournament is Swiatek first WTA Finals Final win having been defeated in the semi- finals last year and the round- robin stage a year before. With the win her quest for next season is to win more success and she will return in 2024 as World top ranked.
