COCO BECOMES FIRST TEENAGER TO WIN THREE WTA TITLES IN A YEAR SINCE ANDREESCU AFTER CLINCHING CINCINNATI CROWN

American Coco Gauff pulled up shock to win over top seed Iga Swiatek in the semi- final and another against Czech’s Karolina Muchova to triumph 6-3 6-4 victory in the final of the CincInnati Open.

The victory is her third title this year winning her first WTA Masters 1000 crown following the previous from 19 year-old wins in Auckland and Washington DC.

With both players meeting for the first time, it was unknown familiar face one could say but the American took the first drive of her intent as she broke her opponent three times in the first set.

She maintained the momentum to serve out her opener to love in her first WTA 1000 final appearance.

Coco who has had a fantastic run in the tournament despite her lead failed to take her chances as she failed to take advantage of three match point chances while serving at 5-2. Realising the danger, although much wasn’t coming from the Czech, she was able to make amends in her next service game to seal victory in the final, Sunday.

With the win she becomes the first teenager to win three WTA titles in one year since Bianca Andreescu in 2019.

The victory ushers her with sterling confidence ahead of the US Open which starts on 28 August and expectedly the third hard –court competition winner this season will move up No.6 in rankings. The success she hopes to continue her good form to New York.

Muchova despite the defeat is another contender for the US Open title having reached the final of the French Open losing to Iga Swiatek in the final.

She will hope to improve on her little resistance late on her first WTA Masters 1000 final appearance in Ohio when she expectedly resume action at the upcoming US Open tennis showdown.
