Super Falcons will square up against Three Lionesse of England in the second round of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Nigeria qualified after impressive round play in Group B drawing their final group match against Republic of Ireland.

The coach Waldrum led Nigeria ladies had drawn the group opener against Canada and defeated co-hosts Australia 3-2 in their second match before facing Ireland to book a ticket in the round of 16.

The 11 time African Champions match against the Lionesse on Monday obviously will be a tough match with some pundits already rating the anticipatory game 50-50. However, the dangerous woman is Chelsea’s Lauren Leizabeth James who has been in sparkling form in the competition.

The sister to Chelsea’s wing back Reece James has scored two goals and three assist in England’s demolition of China 6-1 in their group game. The 21 year-old who was on the verge of scoring a hat-trick before a controversial call from the Video Assistant Referee [VAR] obviously is the hottest player in the England team.

However, Nigeria 40th rated in the world, has been fearless in the competition despite late preparation before the start of the tournament finishing second in Group B behind hosts Australia. The team has one of the world top notch striker Asisat Oshoala who plies her trade with Barcelona. Asisat is also a nominee for 2023 Ballon d’Or having been impressive with the Spain club.

The Nigerian team has other players that can match the strength of the English, obviously experience Desire Oparanozie, Atletico Madrid feminine Rasheedat Ajibade, Deborah Abiodun who is back from suspension after receiving a red card in the first match and ‘save hand’ goalkeeper Chaimaka Nnadozie arguably one of the best goalkeeper at the tournament.

Nigeria team with the outstanding performance against Olympic Champion Canada and defeat of co- hosts Australia 3-2 in an early stage match of Group B, definitely the Super Falcons Women’s World Cup second round showdown against England Lionesse will go down in history, Monday as one of the toughest meets of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
