2023 FIBA WOMEN’s AFROBASKET: D’TIGRESS DEFEATS MOZAMBIQUE QUALIFY TO SEMI- FINAL             

Nigeria’s D’Tigress came from first and second quarter down to defeat Mozambique 59-52 in the quarter- finals on Wednesday.

D’ Tigress who are achieving the feat for the fourth consecutive year finishing top of Group D having defeated Republic of Congo and Egypt.

The coach Rena Wakama led Nigeria females trail behind in the first quarter 18-16 having started the match with Amy Okonkwo, Elizabeth Balogun, Sarah Ogoke , Blessing Ejiofor and Palla Kunaiyi- Akpanah.

Although D’Tigress consistently had a close range marking, their opponent were breezily faster in the second quarter and that paid off with an extended lead of 33-29 at the end of half time.

On resumption of the third quarter the Nigeria ladies found a new rhythm as they were simply quicker with good exchange of passes. Obviously they were magnificent to lead Mozambique 47-39.

In the final quarter they sustained the momentum to book a place in the semi-final, thanks to brilliant performance by Amy Okonkwo who led the Nigerians with 17 points, Balogun netted 12 points and Ifunanya Okoro with 11 points.

Nigeria who are on the quest for a fourth consecutive title had beaten the Republic of Congo and defeated Egypt 83-65 in a fiercely contested fourth quarter which D’Tigress were solid sustaining the momentum winning 27-31 and the game overall 83-65.

Meanwhile, Musa Murjanatu was brilliant with 18 points and Amy Okonkwo who led the scoring against Egypt with 29 points and 13 rebounds are expected to lead the Nigerians when they face Rwanda in the semi- finals on Thursday.
