WIMBLEDON 2023: MEDVEDEV TO FACE ALCARAZ IN SEMI-FINAL AS EUBANKS AND RUNE BAYOU TO DEFEAT
Spaniard Carlos Alcarac will face Russian Daniil Medvedev in the semi- final on the Wimbledon grass when they play on Friday having defeated Danish sixth seed Holger Rune.
The match which obviously showed there will be future rivalry between the two hottest prospects in men’s tennis saw the 20 year old Danish having a good build up despite young Alcarac displaying experience superiority.
The first set saw Holge Rune earn an early break point, having started smartly. Alcaraz saved an ace, increasingly he found a rhythm in the game denying the young Dane further opportunities. The grass was rattled as Rune served keeping hope alive before he held up to a tie – break, back noise from the spectators charging the scene of the tension on the Centre Court.
Alcaraz took control after Rune double fault, prettily if the Dane had sustained the momentum at 3-3, he could have sealed advantage. But the 20 year-old Spaniard powered to lead with a brilliant of backhand winner.
Next set was another exciting one making it predictably tough, prior to the start of the set considering the rising pedigree in their game. Alcaraz, showed composure and it played to his advantage with Rune mistakes outshining his intelligent efforts. Thereby Alcaraz took the advantage to unleash his backhand down the line.
At 2-2 the fatigue and pressure from the young Dane took a nap off Alcaraz as the 20 year-old confidence grew, he went on to lead at 5-3 with the former US Open Champion unable to cope with the momentum at match point when Rune served.
In the next set after the third set Alcaarz found a better rhythm proving to his followers of his rising profile- right. Despite having some wobbly attempts in play he forced Holge Runes to succumb to his superiority to clinch the the match 7 6 7-3 6 4 6 4. But the thrill for the fans is the future of their rivalry expectation which will continue as years come by tentatively in competitions.
‘’I fought until the end. He played a good match, I could have played better.’’ Holge Runes said. Admitting is a part of it and he has to move on hoping for another opportunity to continue his impressive rising play.
Meanwhile, the crowd favoured cheers at the championships, Chris Eubank was knocked out by 27 years Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in a five set thrilling contest.
Medvedev who has not progressed beyond the last 16 booked a place in the semi-final 6 4 1 6 4 6 7 6 7-4 6 4.
Medvedev took the first set with stunning display coupled with quick movement to take a lead an indication of his intent.
But the American powered back in the second set with quick serves. A rapidly force the Russian couldn’t cope with considering the momentum of pressure. He wrapped up the set 1-6.
The next set was another display of intense pressure from Eubanks, his quick serves was magical and he kept a good sustenance to win another set.
But Medvedev who has won the US Open title coupled with now reaching his fourth Grand Slam tournament semi- fina,l proved his deserving place as he bounced back putting the 27 year old America under pressure.
The tenacity of the American might have affected with his exhausting energy and the Russian stuck to his game plan and his experience in later stages proved too much for the underdog. And he went on to end the dream of the crown ‘best man’ at this year’s Wimbledon tournament to qualify to the semi-final his fourth in Grand Slam.
