AFN CHAMPIONSHIPS: AMUSAN, USHEORITSE, OGUNDIRAN QUALIFY FOR WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP
World record holder Tobi Amusan retained her national championships title for the fourth consecutive year at the women’s 100m hurdles of the Nigeria Athletics Championships at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
The race under drizzling rain did not deter Tobi in outshining others, clocking 12.70s with a good lead of 10 meters ahead of nearest competitor.
Tobi who recently won the Stockholm Diamond League in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 12.52s finishing ahead of Sarah Lavin 12.73s and Pia Skrzyszowska 12.78s has now booked a place in the select Team Nigeria for the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
The event scheduled to start from 19th to 27th August will offer the world record holder in women’s 100m hurdles an opportunity to continue her quest to retain the title.
In other events United States based Usheoritse Itsekiri, claimed victory in the men’s 100m sprint with a time of 10.02s, securing vital qualification for the World Athletics Championships. Veteran and Lagos based Seye Ogunlewe finished second in 10.11s, Edo State Alaba Akintla took third with a time of 10.11s.
‘’I prepared myself for this race, and I am so happy I won’’. Itsekiri said after the race expressing satisfaction with his performance which qualified him to the World Athletics Championships in Hungary.
In the women’s 100m race, home based athlete, Blessing Ogundiran, cruised home in a time of 11.50s, Delta State Faith Okwose finished second at 11.51s.
