GENDER EQUALITY: AFTER WINNING PRESTIGIOUS JACKIE ROBINSON SPORTS AWARD SERENA STILL SHINES AS A PHILANTHROPIST

Serena Williams recently was honoured with the prestigious Jackie Robinson Sports Award at the 54th Annual NAACP Image Awards for athletic achievements, Philanthropic efforts and social justice endeavours.

The award which was presented to her for her outstanding hard work and contributions are re-echoes for gender equality and the need to help the less fortunate. During her active period in tennis career, Serena Williams founded her equity company with the aim to help start-up companies not just in sports but other fields of endeavours. Knowing the struggles of women ‘Serena Ventures’ strives for an equal playing field for women.

She has equally been part of the Yetunde Price Resource Center which is committed to help communities heal from trauma through informed programs and resiliency.

The 23 time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams ensures that victims of direct or indirect violence have access to existing resources through partnership with schools, mental health providers, government organisations and community leaders to create and implement culturally attuned free or discount in resiliency training, expressive arts, conflict resolution, violence prevention, and self-care.

With her recent award presented by actress and friend Kerry Washington in an inspirational manner calling her ‘goddess and inspiration’ BET quoted. In expectation, Serena obviously will be involved in more social service and philanthropic works in the coming years now that she has retired her racket from active tennis.
