ABN AMBRO OPEN: ITALIAN SINNER STUNS TSITSIPAS IN TWO SETS TO PLAY WAWRINKA IN QUARTER FINAL

Italian Jannick Sinner produced a two set stunning wins to defeat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-3 on Thursday at the ABN AMBRO Open in Rotterdam.

The victory is the first against a top 3 opponent and Jannick first win against the Greek since 2020. The 21 year-old who had lost in five sets against Tsitsipas when they met at the Australian Open was impressive dominating play with his fast pace serving power and had it pretty good with his aggressive return game to earn the crucial win.

Prior to the win, he outshined Stefanos in his first serve points and converted on three of his four break points. The power of his backhand passing shot was phenomenal clinching his third break and the match after one hour, 21 minutes.

The gallant performance takes Sinner closer in his ATP Head2Head as he trail behind with 2-5 against Tsitsipas.

The Greek had come to the Rotterdam tournament as top seed and their rivalry this season, obviously will be tilting for a win for Tsitsipas at the ABN AMBRO Open. But the outcome fell short of his performance at the Australian Open fourth round where Sinner fell in a five set thriller.

Sinner, 21, was delighted with the win and obviously means a lot for him in his biggest win by career measures of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.

“A lot of work behind. I’m very happy. I played some good tennis, very focused today. Hopefully I can keep it going but sure, Stef is an incredible player. I have a lot of respect for him. He played incredible tennis this year already.

“I was looking forward to this match to be honest.” Sinner said according to ATP.

He added I’m very happy about my performance today.”

The victory at the ATP 500 takes Sinner up two places to N.12 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Ranking this week.

The Italian will now face Stan Wawrinka in the quarter – finals. Wawrinka had defeted Richard Gasquet in two sets with 6-3 , 6-3 on Wednesday and has been in sterling performance winning so far without dropping a set in his two Rotterdam matches.
