ANDY MURRAY RECEIVES WILD CARD FOR DUBAI TENNIS TOURNAMENT

British Andy Murray will participate at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in Dubai after receiving a wild card for the tournament.

Murray who got to the third round of the Australian Open before pulling out of the Rotterdam Open is expected to return at the Qatar Open which begins on the 19 February before competing at the Doha event.

Murray had previously won the ATP 500 in Dubai in 2017, outshining Fernando Verdasco in the final and has expressed his delight to be back at the tournament.

“Coming back to Dubai brings with it a lot of good memories, not least the 2017 and the final with Fernando.” Murray said, according to Eurosports.

Murray currently ranked No.61 in the ATP rankings looks optimistic he will improve from his sliding ranking.

“My form is improving and my game is getting better, so the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships provides another great opportunity for me to continue to climb back up the rankings.”

Meanwhile, Executive Vice President and CEO of Dubai Duty Free, Col Mcloughlin is delighted the Brit presence will attract a more passionate support base. “Everybody knows how important a figure he is in British tennis and, as we have seen in the seven previous times he has competed at our event, he always attracts a strong and passionate support base.”

He further highlighted how important the wildcard granted to the British tennis star last year has impacted on the tournament and the organisers are happy he has accepted the invite once again.

Notable tennis stars that will be competing at the tournament are Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and 2022 champion Russian Andrey Rublev among others competing this year’s event
