RAPE AND OTHER CHARGES AGAINST GREENWOOD DROPPED AS SPONSORS COULD RETURN

The Crown Prosecution Service have dropped all charges against Marson Greenwood who was arrested in January 2022 amid allegations surrounding images and videos and later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive bahaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Crown Prosecution service said the charges were discontinued after key witnesses withdrew their involvement which Greenwood has said he was “relieved” and thanked his family and friends for supporting him.

A spokesman for Crown Prosecution Service said “We have a duty to keep cases under continuous review. “ In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances we are under a duty to stop the case.

The spokesman further said that decisions have been explained to all parties and would always encourage any potential victims to come forward and report to police.

Meanwhile, in a statement released on Greenwood’s behalf, the 21 year –old said. “I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support.

Following the development, United has issued a statement, “Manchester United note the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Marson Greenwood have been dropped. The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comments until that process is complete.”

Following the allegation last year several of Greenwood sponsors including Nike cancelled their deals with the England intentional striker. He was also removed from the FIFA Computer Games and Football Managers series.
