AHMED MUSA TO DONATE N3 MILLION TO FLAMINGOS AS PLUMPTRE CONGRATULATES TEAM

Nigeria’s national team captain Ahmed Musa has continued his philanthropy with a promised donation of N3m million to the historic bronze medal Flamingos who placed third at the just concluded FIFA U-17 World Cup in India on Sunday.

The Nigerian ladies had defeated Germany 3-2 on penalties after the Germans dramatic three goals comeback to drag the encounter into extra time, before the Flamingos prevailed to achieve their biggest feat at the underage FIFA tournament.

The Super Eagles skipper had also shown his love for the performing Nigerian teams, promising U-23 national team N1 million with the defeat of Tanzania’s male U-23 team in Ibadan and another N3 million less than 24 hours for the Flamingos victory.

Nigeria’s U-17 girls were brilliant from the start of the game matching the German pressure especially in the early minutes of the first half. Nigeria took the lead in the 21 minutes of the first through topnotch striker Opeyemi Ajakaye, after she had got the better of Eva Boettcher from a flowing move to send jubilation to fans at the stadium.

The second goal came in 48 minutes which the Flamingos had come closer earlier with Chidera Okewa missing a one –on-one with Boettcher. But the moment of the second goal came when Aminat Omowunmi Bello headed quickly into the net from an intelligent crossv-play from Miracle Usani’s corner kick.

Nigeria made it 3-0 with Edidiong Etim just four minutes on the pitch replacing Okenwa netting the third goal. Obviously the thoughts could be that Flamingos have won.

But the German ‘machine’ ladies fought back with goals from Veiti Jella in 73 minutes and another from Pauline Platine and Loreen Bender levelled score 3-3 to compel third penalty shoot-out for the Flamingos at the knockout stage of the tournament.

Nigeria went on to win 3-2 on penalties to claim her best achievement at the FIFA U-17 women’s World Cup.

The victory was a turning point in social media and set ‘fire’ with congratulatory messages in which Nigeria’ senior female international Ashleigh Plumptre thanked the team for winning the bronze in India.

The Leicester City FC defender did put on her Twitter handle a heartwarming congratulatory message praising the Flamingos for proving doubters wrong at the just concluded U-17 World Cup in India.
