Robert Lewandowski returned to the Allianz Arena but struggled to deliver in front of goal as Bayern Munich scored two goals in four minutes after the break to sink Barcelona.

The Barcelona forward who left Bayern Munich to join the Spanish giants during the transfer window was kept out of the contest by the Bayern defense. Former Liverpool player Sadio Mane who joined the German club during the summer played brilliantly relieving the defense with his deep run from the wing back position to the Blaugrana side, especially in the first half.

Although the Blaugara showed they are a different side than the one that struggled much last season, Frenchman Ousmane Dembele was expressively fantastic from the wing, winding the marking Bayern defenders but failed to convert chances.

On the stroke of half-time, Barcelona appealed for a penalty, but the referee and VAR saw nothing wrong when Alphonso Davies brought down Ousmane Dembele.

Bayern’s strength demonstrated their dominance as they became the first team this season to take a lead against Barcelona, which until Tuesday’s clash in Munich. The Blaugrana had only conceded two goals, one in LaLiga Santander against Real Sociedad and the second in Champions League against Viktoria Pizen.

After the second goal by former Manchester City’s winger Lorey Sane, it was glaring that Barcelona was already defeated despite youngster Pedri’s active play, creating several chances in the match. Lewandowski’s poor showing in front of goal was felt by Xavi as he constantly stood on his toe begging for an opportunity to be converted to goal.

Meanwhile, Nigeria international Calvin Bassey was outstanding in defense for Ajax against Liverpool at Anfield despite a narrow 2-1 defeat in the hands of the Premier League side.

The Super Eagles wing- back has been impressive so far! He made his Champions League debut last week when his side hammered his former teammates- Scottish giant Rangers 4-0 at the Johan Cruyff Arena registering an assist for the 36 time Eredevisie champions. Bassey was bought for 23m Euros from Scottish Premier League side Rangers this summer.
