US OPEN: JABEUR REACHES SEMI-FINAL AS GARCIA BEATS GAUFF IN NEW YORK
12th Seeded Coco Gauff succumbed to a clinical display of French woman Carolina Garcia to end hopes of reaching the semi-final of the Flushing Meadows in New York.
The Cincinnati 2022 Open champion had two battles to settle in New York in her quest for the semi-final place. The crowd of the home girl and Coco! That! She quickly started in the opening set to unsettle the American with a fast pace, imposing her authority to a 4-0 lead with a second break of serve,
The 28 year old tennis star who has now surpassed her second major quarter –final and first since the Roland –Garros 2017 was forced to some resistance as Coco fought back in the fifth game. But the early merging lead was already an advantage for the Frenchwoman who has now achieved her 13th successive win in streak to clinch the first set point on serve after 45 minutes.
Coco, who had retired in her first set round at the Cincinnati Open due to ankle injury, met a tougher Garcia in the second set. The French 17th seeded was ruthless to a 3-1 lead, although Coco saved two break points but failed to take advantage in the following game to succumb to the fire power of Carolina 6-3 6-4.
The crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium was humbled by the French ending the 18 year- old quest to surpass Serena Williams’s record at age 17 in 1999 to become the first American to reach the final four in New York. On the other hand, the sterling performance of Garcia raises her par to become the first Frenchwoman to reach the last four since Amelie Mauresmo in 2006.
On an Instagram page, the teenage American praised her personal performance at the Flushing Meadows “Overall I’m super proud of myself on this tournament. But I’m hungry for more. So maybe next year.” Coco Gauff is quoted!
Meanwhile, Africa’s Ons Jabeur has booked her place in the semi-final defeating giant killer Australia’s AjlaTomljanovic who defeated Serena Williams in “evolving away” retirement match at the US Open.
The Tunisian who is nicknamed Minister of Happiness in the North African country secured 6-4 7-6 (7-4) win to become first African woman in the Open era to reach the last four in singles at Flushing Meadows.
