Serena Williams defeated Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic at the Arthur Ashe stadium with a crowd near capacity 25,000 including celebrities as she won 6-3 6-3 to continue her quest for the US Open title before “evolving away” from the sport.

The 23 –time Grand Slam singles champion had a quick start leading 2-0 in the opening game before Kovinic fought back for a 3-2 advantage to rattle the mood of her most supporters at the Ashe. But she made a fantastic play that looked exciting as the ranked 413th in the world won the final four games to clinch the opening set to the jubilation of the crowd.

The crowd reaction obviously might have had an effect on the players with Kovinic hitting double fault, she worked hard to spark up the scene recovering to pressure Williams with a smart serve. But Wiliams broke for a 3-2. lead. Williams knew she had to keep the momentum alive, that she simply did moving well, hitting well and reinventing her known quality of beautiful tennis played.

Williams who will take a bow in this competition after alerting the world she will retire at the US Open could have been asked if she was still feeling her defeat at the Cincinnati against Emma Raducanu having struggled with a knee injury.

But the former World No.1 went on to wrap up the match and set up a battle against Estonian Annet Kontaveit in a match that will be played on Wednesday. The match against the Estonian second seeded tennis star obviously is going to be another big test for the 40 year-old American in her quest to equal Australian Margaret Court’s all -time record of 24 Grand Slam which has been elusive from one of the world most celebrated tennis icons.

Her win was celebrated by the entire family of Williams who jumped when she clinched the victory to the admiration of other celebrities among the crowd.
