NATIONAL BANK OPEN: HALEP BEATS PEGULA 2-6 6-3 6-4 REACHES TORONTO FINAL
Simona Halep marched on to the final of the Canadian Open having made a dramatic comeback from a set down to beat Jessica Pegula with roared support by the crowd in Toronto.
The opening set saw the Romanian struggle and she went down 2-6, but surprisingly her first in the tournament. Obviously she was outplayed as she struggled to hold her own serve having been broken down twice.
Realizing the momentum of expectation from the crowd as a twice winner of the Canadian Open in 2016 and 2018, she upped her game in the second set and crucially saved two break points at the start of the second set. Although her opponent did comeback tough, she kept up her good performance to lead 3-1 by breaking for the second time in the second set.
At this point the American, obviously cruelly making some unforced errors, the Romanian quickly took the match to a decider. In the final set the opportunities that came the way of the American was enormous as she missed four break points.
Coupled with the crowd support, Simona Halep cemented her lead breaking in the next game, now up 5-2. In spite of the pressure from Pegula, Halep was on the cruising ride serving out rollercoaster match, to achieve her 42nd WTA final and win 2-6 6-3 6-4.
She appreciated the Toronto crowd for the support as she further praised the American for the tough challenge describing her as a good player. The former World No.1 admitted she had to change her tactics to withstand the big challenge her opponent posed during the match. She obviously did calm down and pusher her back and it worked!
She will face either Haddad Maia or Pilskova in the final which at the time of this report the possible final opponent are battling 6-5 5-5 and their match is yet unconcluded.
