COMMONWEALTH GAMES: FOLASHADE WINS SECOND GOLD FOR NIGERIA AS ADIJAT SETS GAMES RECORD

Nigeria’s Adijat Adenike Olarinoye has set a new Commonwealth record in 55kg with a lift of 92kg, 111kg in clean and jerk to win the country’s first gold at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

With a total lift of 203kg in she claimed her firs gold in the Commonwealth Games which sent Team Nigeria into jubilation at the podium following her gallant performance. India’s Sorokhaniban won the silver and England’s Fraer settled for the bronze.

Meanwhile in other games Nigeria’s Abdul-Afeez Osoba knocked down Carl Hield of Bahamas to qualify for the Round of 16 in the men’s Light Middleweight category. Bolanle Shogbamu in spite of good show lost to England’s Jodie Wilkinson in 66kg-70kg, 4-1 on points.

But there is another excitement in the Team Nigeria’s camp with the cheering news of Rafiatu Folashade Lawal second gold for the country. Lawal lifted 206kg to win her first gold medal in Birmingham, England’s Jessica Gordon Brown was second with lift of 197kg to win the silver and Canada’s Talu Darsigny claimed the bronze with lift of 196kg.

Umoafia Edidiong has also increased Nigeria’s position in the medals table winning bronze on Sunday   with a total lift of 290kg (130 +160kg).
