BERLIN OPEN: COCO QUEST FOR TITLE CONTINUE BEATS PLISKOVA IN QUARTER-FINAL

American Coco Gauf outshined Czech Karolina Pliskova to progress to the next stage of the competition.

Pliskova, finalist in last year Wimbledon final where she lost to American Ashleigh Barty had started well clinching 2-0 lead in the early part of the match. Reenacting her performance early in the week which has seen her get this far, her strong shot delivery was excellent.

Gauff who was a finalist at the recently concluded Roland Garros was able to battle back to rhythm and make it 2-2, strongly holding on serve from there. With the aggressive play of Coco, Pliskova made false errors, obviously she wasted chances despite being solid at 5-4.

Realising that her game need to be given an extra effort, down 15-40, Gauff steadied her play, a lot more composed and surprisingly she was able to secure a major hold saving four set point in the process.

The growing confidence of the American was now an advantage with Pliskova missing few balls, giving Gauff the break. The 2022 French Open finalist wasted no chance and she snatched up the opening set 7-5.

Pliskova changed her style of play, pushed the balls more to her opponent in the second set, obviously a defining moment in the game. She quickly took advantage of the weak response to lead 2-0 early in the second set.

But Coco whose rising profile is already ushering pundit’s expectation that she is likely to win a Grand Slam soon, again battle back.

The teenage American took the break to close out the match. At 4-4 she was a beauty in her play forcing Pliskova to many miss of chances. The Czech definitely will blame herself for the defeat for not taking advantage when the lead came her way. With this, Gauff quest for the title continue as the win has moved her to the semi- final.
