FLYING EAGLES WIN WAFU UNDER-20 TITLE
The Flying Eagles of Nigeria has emerged champions of the West Africa B Zone Under-20 Championship in Niamey, Niger Republic, on Friday.
The seven time African Champions defeated the Squirrels of Republic of Benin 3-1 at the Stade General Seyni Kountche. The Ladan Bosso led Flying Eagles netted the first goal through Tolulope Ojo in the 38th minute with a marvelous strike.
The Young Squirrels who had won the Group A which included hosts Niger Republic, Cote d’ Ivoire and Togo against most pundits prediction, were offensively impressive but enable to convert their chances in the first half..
Nigeria scored the second goal in the 62nd minute through Remos Stars striker Ojo before Ibrahim Muhammad outshined Beninoise goalkeeper following a counter attack to lead 3-0. Ibrahim had smartly heaved the ball over the head of the Squirrels goal –stopper.
At the twilight of the second half the Squirrels scored a consolation goal, though the team could not achieve the feat of semi-final effort, edging out Burkina Faso as Nigeria won the title.
The Flying Eagles had spanked the continent title holder Ghana 2-0 in the opening game before a 2-2 draw with Burkina Faso at the Group stage and the marathon semi-final against Ivory Coast. The semi-final had stretched to extra time before the exciting young lads of Nigeria ended the tie 2-1.
Nigeria and Benin will now fly the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) B Zone’s flag at the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Egypt.
