NORRIE WINS INDIAN WELLS BECOMES FIRST BRITON SINCE MURRAY TO REACH MASTERS 1,000 FINAL
Briton left- hander Norrie clinched the Indian Wells Masters with an impressive 3-6 6-4 6-1 win against Georgian word number 36 after going down in the first set. Norrie 26, has been in blistering form this year having reached six finals and won 47 matches.
He had led in the first set with an early break but his opponent fought back, hitting it big to take charge. But the Briton who has shown some level of consistency obviously showed resilience that has been his hallmark of successful year, he broke to love to level and force a deciding set.
Norrie who showed his fitness level fighting to make a comeback broke early in the third and saved three break points on his serve to take 3-0 lead. The left hander obvious intense pressure on the Georgian characterised his determination to clinch the title. His forehand long volley gained him points to hand the Briton his biggest career title.
Norrie, 26, is expected to jump to a career-high 16th in the world ranking, having started the year ranked 74th. His outstanding performance has seen him become British number one, aiming to reach the elite seasoning –ending ATP Finals. After the match he had expressed his happiness at winning the title, after he became the first British player to reach the final at one of the elite Masters 1, 000 events since Andy won in Paris in 2016.
“I can’t really believe it. If you’d have told me I’d have won before the tournament started I wouldn’t have believed you, so it’s amazing,” Norrie said.
Obviously, Norrie joins Emma Raducanu’s stunning US Open women’s singles victory to celebrate another rising sun for British tennis and both are British number one. Norrie, born in South Africa to a Scottish dad and Welsh mum, brought up in New Zealand before playing college tennis in the United States.
