NIGERIA FINISHES 74TH AT TOKYO OLYMPICS AS BRUME AND OBORUDUDU PRESENTED CASH REWARDS
Nigeria finished 74th at the end of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games on Sunday in which 54 African countries participated at the Games in Japan. Team Nigeria won two medals, one silver in Wrestling and one bronze in the women’s Long Jump.
The West African country finished eight best among the 54 African countries that were in Tokyo. Ese Brume first won bronze in the women’s long jump event, before Blessing Oborududu won silver medal in the women’s wrestling freestyle, 68kg.
Kenya came first among the African nations that made the continent proud at the global event and 19th in the world with 10 medals, 4 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals. Uganda was second in Africa and 36th in the world with 4 medals, 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. South Africa came third in Africa and 52nd in the world with 3 medals, 1 gold and 2 silver. While Egypt came fourth in Africa and 54th in the world with 1 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals. Botswana finished tenth in Africa and 86th in the world with a bronze medal.
The USA came first with 133 medals, 39 gold, 41, silver, 33 bronze, China came second 88 medals, 38 gold, 32 silver, 18 bronze, Japan took the third position with 58 medals, 27 gold, 14 silver, 17 bronze while the Great Britain was fourth with 65 medals, 22gold, 21 silver and 22 bronze medals
Meanwhile, in a special event held at Grand Prince Hotel, Tuesday, Nigeria’s Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Sunday Dare had presented cash rewards to Blessing Oborududu and Nigeria ‘Flight Queen’ Ese Brume for their gallant victories as silver and bronze medal winners respectively.
Ese who first put smiles to the face of Nigerians with a distance of 6.97m leapt in the final to win the bronze medal in Long Jump and Blessing Oborududu losing in the final to USA’s Mensah- Stock in women’s Wrestling freestyle, 68kg. Ese had thanked Nigerians for their support in her effort winning the bronze medal achievement in Tokyo. She also appreciated the minister’s motivation and the cash reward of $7,500 and said she is happy not just as an Olympian but as an Olympic bronze medalist.
Blessing Oborududu thanked the minister, Sunday Dare for the $10,000 cash reward in her sterling performance as an Olympian and Olympic silver medallist. Ese and Obrududu also thanked Team Nigeria for their collective effort in representing the country at the Games which started on the 23 July and ended Sunday with 206 participating countries and 93 making to the medals table with Nigeria the 8th best in Africa and 54th in the world.
