BLESSING OBORUDUDU WINS NIGERIA’S FIRST EVER WRESTLING SILVER MEDAL IN OLYMPICS

Nigeria’s Blessing Oborududu has won the first Silver medal in the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Oborududu lost to USA’s Tamyra Mensah-Stock 4-1 in highly contested wrestling match in the women’s freestyle 68kg on Tuesday. She becomes the second Nigerian to win a medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games following the brilliant performance of Nigeria’s ‘ Flight Queen’ Ese Brume who won the first Bronze in the long jump event. She leapt 6.97m.

With Oborududu’s victory she becomes the first Nigerian ever to win a Silver medal in the Games. Blessing who defeated Mongolia’s Soronzonboldyn Battsetseg 7-2 in the semi-finals is also the first Nigerian to win an Olympics Medal in wrestling.

In her gallant sterling performance in road to the final, she had earlier defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Meerin Zhumanazarova 3-2 in the quarter-finals, after seeing off Azerbaijan’s Elis Manolova in the Round of 16.

Blessing Oborududu, 32, is currently ranked as the world number two wrestler. She is also ten time African champion from 2010 to 2020.
