Ese Brume has won Nigeria’s first medal of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in the early hours of Tuesday, “Naija Flight Queen” she claimed a bronze medal after finishing third in the women’s Long Jump event.

Brume leapt 6.97m in her very first jump to place second in the battle for the gold, with America’s Brittany Reece claiming the silver medal the highly contested event before Malaika Mihambo of Germany won the gold in her last attempt with a stunning jump of 7.00m

The world champion who won the world title in Doha two years ago had leapt 6.68m in her very first attempt but Brume and Brittany Reece battled the top spot swapped lead before the world reigning champion finished brightly in her last attempt to add the Tokyo Olympic gold to her crown.

With Ese Brume’s performance she joins and becomes the first Nigeria track and field athlete to win a medal at the Olympic since 2008. Blessing Okagbare had won the long jump individual Olympic medal in Beijing 2008 with Chioma Ajunwa’s gold in at the Atalanta ‘96 Olympics and now Ese Bume with a bronze.

The “Naija Flight Queen” Brume “Pride of Africa” also joins Gloria Alozie and Blessing Okagbare as the only Nigerians to win individual medals at both the World and the Olympics.

Meanwhile, Ese has dedicated the bronze medal to Bishop David Oyedepo,

“Setting the African record boosted my confidence because then my injury was still fresh, yet I was able to set that record and a Personal Best. So, I thought to myself that ‘yes I could do it’ and my coach thought the same as well, so we never settled for less. Brume said

“And to those who were her but could not compete, never settle for less. God is with you. It is not over until it is over. You may have competed here today but God has a better future ahead for you.

She added “This medal means that God is alive, Jesus is alive. I plan to go to Canaan-Land to wear it (Bronze medal) on Bishop David Oyedepo

Ese Brume, 25, holds a Personal Best 7.17m and she is the African Junior record holder and three time African senior champion in long jump. She is from Ughelli in Delta State, Nigeria.
