AKWA UNITED TILT CLOSER TO NPFL TITLE WITH SIX GAMES TO END OF SEASON

Nigeria Professional League side Akwa United strengthened their ambition to clinch the NPFL title with a 1-0 victory against former double CAF Champions League winner, Enyimba international of Aba in their Matchday 32 on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

The goal came at the twilight of the match as Charles Atshimene scored from the penalty spot in the 90 minute to give the Promise Keepers the much needed three points. Mfom Udoh had taken a drive into the box in the 86 minute and he was brought down for the penalty. With Enyimba coming into the game undefeated in the last six matches, it was obvious to the Akwa Ibom based football club that they needed to up their game to keep their chase for their first-ever league title hope alive.

With just six games to the end of NPFL 2021 season, other teams recorded not too impressive results. In Nnewi the commercial nerve town in the South-East, relegation battling Ifeanyi Ubah defeated title chaser and second place in the league table, Nasarawa United 2-1 with goals from Nonso Nzediegwu in the 28th minute and Uzochukwu Ifejiofor with 19 minute to end of the match for Ifeanyi Ubah, while Chigozie Abasi scored an equalizer in the 30 minute for Nasarawa United.  

In Ondo, relegation embattled Sunshine Stars scored a 59 minute goal to defeat Kano-Pillars with Sadeeq Yusuff scoring the vital winner for the Akure based side. Elsewhere, Warri Wolves were defeated by Rivers United and Abia Warriors defeated Kwara United. In Enugu Rangers International defeated Wikki Tourists in Enugu.

Meanwhile, Kennedy Boboye’s Promise Keepers consolidated their top position with 60 points while the Peoples Elephant now have 52 points.
