AFRICAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS POSTPONED FOR THE THIRD TIME

The African Athletics Championship which should have been held in 2020 but rescheduled for June 1st -5th 2021 in Oran has been postponed for the third time due to Covid-19 pandemic, it was initially moved again to June 22 to 26th in Algiers.

The Algerian Ministry of Youth and Sports (MJS) in statement, said “due to the health situation, marked by a resurgence in the spread of the coronavirus pandemic and the risk of circulation of new variants”. 

With the statement it is now unclear the event’s date and venue as the African Athletics body are yet to make any public statement on the situation. Meanwhile, the World Athletics body has set June 29 as the deadline for the qualifying mark for athletes that wish to take part in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games.

The statement added “The MJS called on the Algerian Athletics Federation (FAA) to make the necessary arrangements to inform the officials of the Confederation of African Athletics in order to agree on new dates for the holding of these championships as soon as the health situation improves.”

The Algerian Athletics Federation did state that the FAA decision was “following the recommendations of the scientific monitoring committee of the evolution of Covid-10 pandemic.”

The Nigerian South-East city, Asaba, Delta State hosted the event in 2018.
