BRITISH JOHANNA KONTA BEAT MAGDA LINETTE 6-4 7-5 IN MIAMI OPEN

British women’s number one Johanna Konta has secured a place in the next round of the Miami Open with victory over Poland Magda Linette, 6-4 7-5.

Konta, 29, who is seeded 17th had a good start in the game but complained after the match on several things she had to contend with during game against Magda.

“It was hot, it was windy, so it was a lot of things out there to contend with,” Konta said. She continued “I was just really pleased that I was able to compete well and find a way to come through.”

This is Konta’s second win in the 2021 WTA event and she showed flashes of a better player compare to her performance at the Adelaide International tennis tournament in Australia a month ago. Although Linette did display good tennis with effort to make a fight back in the second set, but she was overpowered by Konta who was absolutely spectacular to earn the victory.

In other matches Ashleign Barty fought back from 5-2 down to win in the deciding set, 6-3 4-6 7-5 against Slovakia’s Kristina Kucova. British men’s number five Liam Broady was defeated by Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 7-5 6-7 (5-7) 6-1.

Meanwhile Draper retired in his game with Kazakhstan;s Mikhail Kukushkin having felt dizzy and was treated earlier. The 19 year-old could not continue as he trailing 6-5 on serve the hot condition.

According to the BBC, Draper said, “I think the conditions got on top of me a little bit today and physically I just need to improve more,” Draper had ice pack on his neck after retiring from the match, also said “I’ve got a lot to improve on but my level seems to be pretty close.”

He had revealed he had coronavirus in January, but obviously showed he is fine having had medical treatment and walked off the court after retiring from the match.
