SUPER EAGLES PLAY GOALLESS AGAINST LEONE STARS IN FREETOWN
Nigeria’s Super Eagles settled for a goalless result against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone in African Nations Cup qualifiers at Siaka Stevens Stadium, Freetown on Tuesday.
The Nigerian team which squandered a 4-0 lead within half an hour to draw 4-4 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City in the first leg of the double header played 13th November failed to score against the Sierra Leoneans.
The character of the Nigerian team was deflated with the absence of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen who was injured. Super Eagles best chance fell in the 82nd minute when Kelechi Iheanacho’s effort was countered by Sierra Leonean goalkeeper.
Nigeria’s midfielder, Oghenekaro Etebo got injured in the first half and he was replaced by Shehu Abdullahi. Although, the Eagles were able to absorb the pressure from the Sierra Leonean attackers with Nigeria goalkeeper making some crucial saves.
Meanwhile, Coach Gernot Rohr’s has praised his team for the result, especially his goalkeeper who made superb saves and maintained he is satisfied with the result.
With the result, Nigeria still lead Group L, but not yet good enough for qualification to the African Cup Nations to be hosted by Cameroon. Nigeria will play her next match against the Republic of Benin and will hope not to concede a defeated to stand the chance of qualifying.
