SABALENKA WINS OSTRAVA OPEN IN FIRST WTA ALL-BELARUSIAN FINAL

OSTRAVA OPEN: The Ostava Open in Czech Republic witnessed the first WTA all-Belarusian final with third seeded Aryna Sabalenka defeating fourth-seeded Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday.

Azarenka who defeated Sabalenka in the second round of the US Open last month was outshined by the 22 year –old Sabalenka in a match  the third seeded dominated the match with good pace and shots. 

The 14th ranked Victoria Azarenka obviously showed some sign of one who heeded attention following unspecified health problems in the second set before calling for medical time out in the second set for brief medical treatment.

The match resumed and Azarenka tried to make a comeback after receiving treatment when she was at 4-1 down in the second set but Sabalenka who was on the cruise to winning the maiden Ostrava Open, replied with quick play to gain his fifth break and served out the match.

The inaugural Ostrava Open which was played without spectators was almost doubtful but the health authorities in Czech Republic gave a go ahead as the Covid-19 pandemic that led to cancellation of some competitions such as the China tournament is globally being controlled.

Aryna Sabalenka who was excited on her winning the maiden Ostrava Open wished her opponent Asarenka speedy recovery from her health problems.

“I hope you’ll get better soon.” Azarenka said after the match.The victory is the second title for Sabalenka in the first WTA all-Belarusian final after the Qatar Total Open in Dubai in February. She lost to Asarenka at the US Open second round in 6-1, 6-3 last month.
