FERNANDES TO CAPTAIN MANCHESTER UNITED AS IGHALO MAKES SQUAD TO FACE PSG
Manchester United manager, Ole Gunner Solskjaer has named Portugal international Bruno Fernandes as the captain of his team to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League opening game in Group H.
Solskjaer confirmed this in a press conference, Monday, which Fernandes will captain in absence of Harry Maguire who is nursing a slight injury. Although, Maguire was part of his team in their Premiership game against Newcastle on Saturday which he scored a goal in the 4-1 defeat of Newcastle United.
“We hope Harry will be fit for the weekend [for the Chelsea game] but we’re not sure,” Solskjaer told reporters in Paris. “The captain is sitting next to me, Bruno will captain tomorrow (Tuesday).”
Manchester United are missing several players for the Parc des Princess encounter against last season finalist Paris Saint-Germain with Eric Baily, Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood and newly signed Edinson Cavani also not travelling with the team.
Meanwhile, Fernandes has expressed surprise at his choice as the captain of the United team for the game in Paris
“I was not expecting this.” Bruno said “I know the same time as you .Of course, for me, it’s an honour I will be captain for my team-mates and being captain of Manchester United is important for me.
“I think the captain is everybody and everyone needs to help, everyone needs to be a leader. The leadership is different in every player. Tomorrow [Tuesday] will not be about me, it’s about the team. Leading the team is every day in training ground, every training, every game and I think everyone is doing their own job to lead the team in the way they think is the best.”
Meanwhile, Nigeria international Odion Ighalo will hope to continue his impressive performance with the Manchester United team already in Paris for the Champions League game PSG which comes up Tuesday.
