ST. PETERSBURG OPEN: WAWRINKA SURVIVES BRITAIN’s DAN EVANS IN FIRST ROUND
World No.18 Stan Wawrinka got a first round tough start at the St. Petersburg Open, in St. Petersburg, Russian coming from a set down to win Britain’s Dan Evans 3-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5 in a match that lasted two hours and 31 minutes.
The match played at the Sibur Arena saw the 34th ranked Evans making counters with 33 winners and committed 21 unforced after Fifth seed Stan Wawrinka had hit 46 winners, including eight service ace and made 33 unforced errors.
Wawrinka who made the St. Petersburg final in 2016 and the semi-final in 2018 was delighted to have won the match, although, he acknowledged it was always tough playing Dan,
“It’s always difficult when I play Dan. He’s a great player.” Stan said after the game. He added “Always a tough battle with him. Today, I saved some important points in the second, I stayed focused on my game. I started to serve better and be a bit more aggressive. So, really happy to be back here in St. Petersburg and to have won the match.”
Meanwhile in some other first round challenge, Alexander Bulbik beat Mackenzie McDonald, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4, and Taylor Fritz lost to Cameron Norrie 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
