HOW NAOMI OSAKA, DOMINIC THIEM RULED COVID-19 US OPEN
The 2020 US Open the first Grand Slam amid Covid-19 witnessed a dramatic final without spectators as Naomi Osaka and Dominic Thiem won the female and male US Open respectively.
Japanese sensation Naomi Osaka set the court bubbles by winning her 3rd Grand Slam at the US Open recovering from a set down to beat Belarusian Victoria Azarenka in an epic final winning 1-6 6-3 6-3.
Naomi who fought with a hamstring injury for almost 3 weeks was amasing in the final winning her third major and second title at Flushing Meadows in one hour and 53 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Saturday.
Victoria Azarenka who defeated 23-time Grand Slam Champion Serena Williams in the semi-final started in outstanding manner, when she broke Naomi’s serve thrice to claim the first set 1-6 under an hour.
Osaka continue her struggle in the second set obviously looking like one that is about to lose the set after losing the her serve trailing 0-2 in the second set , rejuvenated and broke back immediately to level the set. She maintained composure to break the Belarusian twice to seal the set 6-3.
“really glad I did it.”
The world highest paid female athlete having won the second set took the deciding set and started aggressively increasing the force in her shots, she broke the fourth game and took lead 4-1. Victoria Azarenka former one number one reinforce with additional effort and fought back and made it 4-3 as Osaka lost serve in the seventh game.
2018 US Open Champion Naomi Osaka converted her second match point to claim the deciding set and the title as the Western & Southern Champion Azarenka was defeated.
Naomi who has continued to wear a new mask in every match at the tournament bearing the name of the alleged Black victim by police and racist violence in the United States in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement. Said she is excited to win the tournament which she described as Incredible,
“In the end all I focus on is what I can control on the tennis court. That’s what I did [in 2018]. I feel like that’s what I did this time.”
Meanwhile in the US Open men’s epic final, Sunday, lasting four hours and two minutes Dominic Thiem staged a remarkable comeback to win his first Grand Slam title from two sets down to defeat Alexander Zverev 2-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-6 (8-6).
Thiem who has lost three of his previous Grand Slam finals, twice to Rafael Nadal at the French Open and Novak Djokovic in Australia earlier this year was outstanding in display of master class tennis returning from to set down to claim the title.
