FRENCH FERRO WIN WTA PALERMO OPEN- Upset Fourth Seed Kontaveit

The Palermo Ladies Open final, on Sunday witness shock upset as world 53rd ranked French Fiona Ferro upset fourth-seeded Anett Kontaveit of Estonia in 6-2, 7-5 to win the Palermo, Sicily, WTA Open.

Anett Kontaveit who ousted Croatian top seed and 15th world rank, Petria Martic in the semi-final, could not survive the power play of the French lady.

With the win, this marks the 23 year-old second WTA title after winning the Lausanne last year, which could up her and break into the top 50 next week.

Ferro who defeated Italian Canilia Giorgi in the semi-final, said after the match. “It means a lot especially after a five tough months of practice” she said “I was already feeling so happy just to be back competing and be on the court but it’s even nicer to finish the week this way”

“I was feeling relaxed, I don’t know why but I wasn’t really feeling the pressure” Ferro said, “It was a tough match…but I had a good intensity. I didn’t miss a lot, I had a lot of winners. I’m really happy to have the trophy.” Ferro said, according to Espn.

Kontaveit who has lost five of the six finals she has contested said after the match.

“I don”t feel like I did too much wrong, she was just too good today” Kontaveit said. I’m really happy we’re back playing tennis and able to compete.

“At the beginning it was terrifying but also really exciting at the same time”

The Palermo Open, the first tour –level tennis open in five months following the Covid-19 pandemic, saw strict protocols with limited number of fans (300 spectators) as players and officials were tested for coronavirus every four days. With a player that tested positive withdrawing from the clay- court tournament over the weekend.

The WTA season continue next week with the events in Praque and Lexington, with the US Open starting August 31.
