PALERMO OPEN: MARTIC, TWO OTHER TOP SEEDS SURVIVE UPSETS – As They Advance to Quarter Final

Russian Liudmila Samsonova succumbed to top seed Petra Martic who was a set down as Martic came back to reach the quarter-finals at the Palermo Open on Thursday.


With a day of upsets on Wednesday, top seed Martic was under pressure early in the game but dug deep to secure a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win at the clay event, which marks the return of tennis after five-months shutdown due to Covid-19. She will play Belarus Aliaksandra Sasnovich next in the WTA Palermo Open.


In other game to the quarter final match, fourth seed Estonian’s Anett Kontaveit also had to fight for a come-back to beat Germany’s Laura Siegemund 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. She will face 19 year-old wildcard Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who had stunned Donna Vekic to advance to her first WTA quarter-final.


Seventh seed and former World No.26, Dayana Yastremska eased pass Oceane Dodin to a close out a straight sets to win 6-2, 6-4. She will face local favourite Camila Giorgi, who came from a set down to beat Slovanian teenager Kaja Juvan, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to complete the quarter final-line up.
