COIVID -19: NIGERIA WOMEN LEAGUE 2019/20 SEASON CANCELLED – Clubs to prepare for CAF Women Champions League 2021

The Nigeria Women Football League has been cancelled for the 2019/20 season across its three tiers. The decision was taken at the management Committee meeting of the Women Football League.


The committee, headed by veteran Journalist and Broadcaster, Aisha Falode, in conjunction with women clubs owners and managers, agreed on the cancellation for the sake of protecting the health of the players and officials in the various clubs, in line with the Covid-19 protocols.


The meeting which was held via webinar on Tuesday July 7, 2020 between the NWFL Chairperson and Clubs Chairmen, reached the decision among others in a communique signed by one of the clubs’ chairmen, Abdul Sule, after the virtual meeting.
The clubs chairperson and chairmen also agreed that clubs should be encouraged to prepare for the 2020/2021 season contingent upon the time the protocol for resuming sporting activities is approved.


It was also noted that e new league season will only resume after approval has been given by the relevant authorities.
The communique also stated, clubs are to use the period of the break to complete all registration processes including evidence of up to date payment of salaries to their players.


Meanwhile, it also agreed that the 2020/2021 Nigeria Women Premier League season will be structured as full season (Straight League) with a plan to organise another draw for the purpose.
The process is to enable the country present champion that will represent Nigeria at the Confederation of African Football, CAF Women Champions League in 2021.


The Nigeria Women League leadership urged all clubs to display and give quality to representation on the continent during the inaugural CAF Women Champions League.
